Playing around in or near water is something that attracts people of all ages from the very young to those well along in years. Many of us, for example, enjoy paddling along the sea shore, having a swim, or being on a boat. Many sports, and outdoor activities, involve water.
It makes sense then to ensure that we have the right equipment in order to be safe and comfortable when engaging in any water pursuits. Someone involved in canoeing or kayaking must consider certain items as an essential part of their outfit when carrying out their sport. These would include such things as approved personal flotation devices, waterproof clothing, boats tailored to their size and shape. But, in addition, the right kind of footwear is important – water shoes.
What is meant by “water shoes” in this context? Imagine being in a canoe, inevitably getting your feet wet, and your flip flops or sneakers without any grip slip and slide on the floor of the boat. They would be of very little value. Your feet get cold, and in time your footwear starts to grow mildew and to rot due to the effects of water. Having the right water shoes on results in the canoeist being comfortable, being able to grip even when wet.
And the same applies to some other water sports, or even past times where water is involved. Water shoes can be worn around the pool, to the beach, paddling, and when you go canoeing. While flip flops are ideal for lounging around in the summer, there is no question that water shoes have the added durability needed for enjoying some activities.
Pardon the pun, but water shoes are not “one size fits all.” In other words, there are so many types on the market that selecting the right ones is not too difficult. Much depends on the aquatic environment you want them for. Take for example paddling. Factors such as the terrain, air and water temperatures, and your planned paddling location should be taken into account. Water shoes used for paddling near to the sea or ocean needs to protect your feet from hidden dangers lurking beneath the surface. You might encounter mussels, clamshells, coral, rocks, and without the proper footwear you could hurt yourself. Much would depend on where you were travelling to. You would likely decide upon a different pair of water shoes for paddling in the sea off Florida, than you would for paddling in the usually cold Irish sea at Blackpool, for instance.
